The Lord Is My Shepherd, I shall Not Want: Morning Prayer for February 9, 2025

The Lord is my Shepherd, a caring guide who is always present to lead, protect, and provide for His flock. As a new day dawns, we reflect on His role as a loving guide who takes us through green pastures and calm waters, even when the path is unclear. With His unwavering care and support, we are assured that despite the challenges we face, we will lack nothing under His watchful eye.

In His Word, we find comfort and hope. Psalm 23:1 declares, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” This timeless promise reminds us that, through His guidance, our lives are filled with divine provision, protection, and peace. Today, we commit ourselves to follow His leading and trust in His unfailing care.

Biblical Basis for The Lord as Our Shepherd

  1. Psalm 23:1-3“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”
These verses establish the central truth that God, as our Shepherd, provides for every need, leading us to places of rest and renewal.
  2. John 10:11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Jesus not only guides but also protects His flock with a sacrificial love that ensures our safety and well-being.
  3. Psalm 23:4“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
In times of hardship, God’s presence is our refuge, providing comfort and assurance in every dark moment.
  4. Matthew 6:26“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
This reminder from Jesus affirms that our Shepherd cares for even the smallest of His creations, emphasizing His attentive care over our every need.

Biblical Examples of the Shepherd’s Care

  1. David the Shepherd-King
Before he was king, David was a humble shepherd who experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of caring for a flock. His early life as a shepherd prepared him to trust in God’s provision, a trust he later expressed in Psalm 23.
  2. Jesus, the Good Shepherd
Jesus demonstrated His role as the Good Shepherd by laying down His life for His sheep. His ministry was marked by compassion, guidance, and the willingness to protect His followers at all costs, serving as the ultimate example of sacrificial love.
  3. Moses Leading the Israelites
In the wilderness, Moses led the Israelites, relying on God’s guidance and provision. Although not explicitly called a shepherd in that context, his leadership and care for the people reflect the shepherd’s role in guiding and nurturing His flock.
  4. The Faithful Believer’s Journey
Every believer’s life is a testimony to God’s shepherding care. Through times of triumph and trial, we experience His guiding hand—leading us through challenges, providing for our needs, and comforting us in our distress.
