Dealing with Offences that Stagnate Your Progress – February 10, 2025

Offences—whether they come in the form of personal betrayal, harsh words, or unjust treatment—can become heavy chains that hinder our spiritual, emotional, and even physical progress. These wounds often fester if left unaddressed, leading to bitterness, anger, and a stagnation that prevents us from moving forward into the fullness of God’s blessings. Tonight, as we come before the Lord, we acknowledge the pain of these offenses and ask for His divine intervention to heal our hearts, restore our vision, and enable us to progress in our purpose.

The Scriptures remind us that while we may encounter hurtful actions and words, our response must be rooted in the love and forgiveness of Christ. Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” This evening, we choose to release the weight of offenses, trusting that God’s grace will free us to continue our journey without the burdens of past hurts.

We understand that dealing with offenses is not about ignoring the pain but rather about confronting it with the truth of God’s Word. When we forgive, we reclaim our power and break the cycle of stagnation. As we prepare to pray, let us surrender our wounded hearts and invite God to renew our spirit, so that we can move forward with confidence and clarity.

Biblical Basis for Dealing with Offences

  1. Ephesians 4:31-32
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
This passage reminds us that forgiveness is essential. It calls us to let go of bitterness and malice, replacing them with kindness and compassion.
  2. Matthew 18:21-22
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.'”
Jesus’ instruction on forgiveness emphasizes that we should be willing to forgive repeatedly, reflecting the boundless mercy that we ourselves have received.
  3. Colossians 3:13
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
This verse reinforces the idea that forgiveness is not optional—it is a commandment that mirrors the grace of our Savior.
  4. Romans 12:19-21
“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
These verses teach us that vengeance is not our responsibility; rather, we are to overcome evil by doing good, leaving justice in God’s hands.
  5. Psalm 103:8-12
“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love…He has removed our transgressions from us as far as the east is from the west.”
This passage reassures us of God’s immense capacity to forgive and erase our offenses, encouraging us to mirror His compassion in our own lives.

Biblical Examples of Overcoming Offences

  1. Joseph Forgiving His Brothers
Joseph’s journey in Genesis is a powerful testament to overcoming deep familial wounds. Betrayed by his own brothers and sold into slavery, Joseph suffered immense betrayal. Yet, when he rose to power in Egypt, he forgave his brothers, proclaiming that what they intended for harm, God used for good. His forgiveness not only healed his own heart but also restored his family and secured their future. Joseph’s life exemplifies that overcoming offenses can lead to restoration and unexpected blessings.
  2. Jesus Forgiving the Sinner
One of the most profound examples of forgiveness is found in the story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). Despite the harsh judgment she faced, Jesus extended forgiveness and a chance for renewal. His response was not one of condemnation but of compassion, demonstrating that forgiveness has the power to break the chains of shame and restore dignity.
  3. Stephen’s Martyrdom
In Acts 7, Stephen’s courageous declaration of faith even in the face of death highlights the ultimate act of forgiveness. As he was being stoned, he prayed for his attackers, asking God to forgive them. Stephen’s example shows that true spiritual maturity involves releasing bitterness, even in the most dire circumstances, and trusting in God’s ultimate justice.
  4. The Prodigal Son
The parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) illustrates the transformative power of forgiveness and restoration. Despite the son’s rebellious actions and the pain he caused, his father’s loving response exemplified unmerited grace and forgiveness. This story reminds us that embracing forgiveness can restore not only personal relationships but also one’s sense of purpose and hope.
